Make the list. From the Bible, from your friends, from your own history, what would you label the most profound acts of compassion from Jesus? Mercy was shown to the woman caught in the act of adultery, John 8. Lazarus was raised, to the delight of his sisters, John 11:33-35. The healing of the leper, Mark 1:41, or the kindness shown to the woman at the well, John 4, likely top lists for many, but there is more.
In Luke 8:26-37, there is a breathtaking act of mercy almost no one sees. Filthy and naked, a demon possessed vagabond living among the dead confronted Jesus and received freedom, but Jesus granted mercy for more than a madman. Legion, the name provided by the army of evil spirits who had tormented the fallen man for far too long, begged to avoid the pit. Legion begged for mercy, and Jesus said yes. Remembering the havoc they had wreaked in the heavenlies, Jesus gave mercy. Knowing the cross that lay ahead, Jesus gave mercy. Understanding the spiritual battles which would echo through the ages, Jesus gave mercy. Beyond the demoniacs and the demons, Jesus extends mercy to all who ask. There is mercy for you. If we are called to be like him, how can we do less? I'm Julie West and that's Worth Remembering.
